A person who does not know to read and
write faces many challenges in life. They are unable to read sign
boards, bus destinations, bank transactions, help children in their
education etc. they are often cheated in the market place. The
person lives with low self-esteem and becomes incapable to defend or
speak up in any forum. Illiteracy is a serious challenge in many
rural communities of India, where the average literacy rate is
around 65% which is far below the nation average of 74 %(
Census2011). The low functional literacy continues to be a great
challenge and hinders development in any form. As a strategy,
vimukti Pothnal strives to reach the most marginalized communities
in society; thus this project has reached some of the most backward
and disadvantaged villages of Manvi taluka. More than 91% of those
reached are from SC, ST, OBC and minority communities. 20
facilitators in 20 villages were directly involved in steering the
project at the grass root level. The project used computer based
functional literacy software, a laptop, two speakers, one projector
and UPS. Month of November 580 learners appeared for an internal
test to assess their learning and learners appeared for the exam
conducted by national institute of Open Schooling in collaboration
with Saakshar Bahrath Mission. The project area is Urban and Slum
area of Manvi town and Education kits like note books, pencils, pens
black board color pencils etc were provided to the beneficiaries
during the training.
