Awareness to Local Dais in 6 unites
“Every woman deserves a safe birth experience”

The number of home births are reducing in the Pothnal and surrounding areas due to home visits and health education by the Vimukti Charitable Trust animators. Presently around 40% of deliveries still take place at home by a traditional birth attendant (Dais). There are many complex social, educational and financial reasons for this. Unhygienic conditions of the rooms and faulty practices increase the risk of complications; Improvement in prenatal care requires a multi pronged approach. Therefore fr. Sathish Fernandes, the Director of Vimukti gave much attention in organizing these workshops in different villages of Pothnal area.

On Feb 26th 28th March 9th and 11th 2013 Vimukti Pothnal organized one day awareness programme to all the Local Dais in 6 unites. Held in different places of Manvi Taluka, the purpose of the programme was to motivate and to make known the importance of motherhood and how to take care of the new-born child. In 6 unites various resource persons were invited to give input sessions. In their input sessions resources persons enlightened the gathering saying, dais is a health care profession in which providers offer care to childbearing women during pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period. They also help care for the newborn and assist the mother with breastfeeding. dais are trained to handle certain more difficult deliveries, including breech births, twin births and births where the baby is in a posterior position, using non-invasive techniques and many other related issues were discussed and guidelines were given in order to improve health in given circumstances. Nearly 450 Dais were benefited from this awareness programme.
