Training on Adolescent
girls on Eliminating Child Marriage and Gender-based Violence:
Vimukti Pothnal
VIMUKTI Pothnal in collaboration with Province of Emilia-Romagna,
Italy organized training on adolescents on Eliminating Child
Marriage and Gender- based Violence on 5th of March, 2023 at Vimukti
center Pothnal. The objective of this trainings is adolescent girls
face many social challenges such as gender discrimination, child
marriage, teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse, and domestic violence in
their young lives. As young daughters, early married young women,
and often as young mothers, they are expected to conform to certain
“norms” and behaviors. The following key issues were explained to
the adolescent girls by the two resource persons, who are at risk,
in the age group of 13 to 18 years, to build their capacities in
three ways.
-
Firstly, by helping
them understand and acknowledge the enormity of the issues they
face, such as the lack of basic rights including access to
educational facilities and livelihood opportunities, and being
forced into child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and domestic
violence.
-
Secondly, by
attempting to improve their decision making and negotiation
abilities regarding education and livelihood, choosing a life
partner, tackling dowry, managing expectations faced as a bride,
fighting domestic violence, and handling the pressure to produce
babies.
-
Thirdly, by
encouraging value, respect, and trust within themselves through
discussions, impartial sessions, and creating spaces for
exploration. The improved capacities of adolescent girls can
help them support each other which can lead to the creation of
safe and supportive spaces. The resource persons conducted the
sessions very creatively and adolescent girls actively
participated, clarified their doubts. Nearly 102 adolescent
girls attended and benefited from this training.
