Children, parent’s stage protest for Toilets in government Schools
before DC office Raichur: Vimukti Pothnal
“Many girls’ students at primary level quit studies owing to lack
of this facility”
Vimukti children parliament members with the collaboration of
likeminded NGO’S from Raichur staged a protest in front of Deputy
commission office at Raichur on Tuesday 14th November,2017 alleging
that the elected representatives and the concerned officials had
failed to utilize the allotted amount for the development of the
school infrastructures like maintenance of toilets, cleanliness in
the school premises. Vimukti Children here demanded proper
implementation of Right to information Act and checking of
children’s rights violations.
While children across the state celebrated children’s Day, hundreds
of students of government-run schools across the district took part
in a protest. The students participated in the drawing competition
held as part of their dharna on the ‘Children’s day’ to get the
attention of the authorities.
Children came from various schools holding placards and shouting
slogans in demanding immediately to repair the dilapidated school
buildings, toilets etc. Children representatives from various
schools, who were present in this protest, memorandum was submitted
to the DC and CEO of Raichur to give in writing that they would
complete the work within 15days; so far nothing has been done
despite holding several meetings with district in-charge and higher
Education minister regarding the construction of toilets in the
government schools in the district. The concrete plan regarding
toilet facilities, play ground, electricity, pure drinking water,
play materials etc.
Fr. Sathish Fernandes VCT Director expressed before Media, the basic
infrastructure problems of the school not cast a shadow on the
studies of the children. Rather school infrastructure should also be
suitable for environment for education. It is a right of every child
to have access to toilet in their schools. However, no official from
the department concerned has even tried to attend to the problems
being faced by the students. Owing to lack of toilets most of the
girl students at primary level quit their studies. Today we have
government schools in the district but don’t have clean drinking
water facilities, compound walls, indoor outdoor games materials
library books, etc.
CEO representative Mr. Mahamad Usef, Zella Panchyath program
coordinator, director child protection officer, women and child
development officer were present. 128 school children
representatives were present and witness this children rally.
